Nigeria’s Leaders Chose Morphine For Too Long Instead Of Treating Economic Problems – Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that for too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose to administer “morphine” to the country’s economic problems rather than addressing the underlying issues, justifying his administration’s recent reforms as necessary, albeit painful, surgery.
For too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose morphine while praying for a miracle that never came.
Tinubu, speaking during his Independence Day address on October 1, 2026, compared the nation’s economic state to a patient diagnosed with cancer. He argued that his administration had no choice but to perform difficult and painful treatment to excise the “cancer” of structural economic decay rather than merely managing the symptoms.
The President maintained that his administration resolved to do things differently upon assuming office, despite the significant hardship and difficulties the public has faced as a result of his economic policies. He emphasized that the reforms were not the cause of the country’s economic problems but were instead the required intervention to address long-standing systemic failures.
