The platform said the situation went beyond the lack of furniture, stressing that it also concerned the safety, dignity and future of children whose families depend on public education.

Pupils of LEA Primary School, Idu Koro 2, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, are reportedly learning under deteriorating conditions, with some children forced to sit on a dusty, bare floor due to a shortage of suitable desks and chairs.

The situation was highlighted by Socio-Accountability platform, MonITNG, which called on the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the FCT Administration, education authorities and the Abuja Municipal Area Council to urgently intervene.

In a statement drawing attention to the condition of the school, MonITNG described th situation as sad.

“Attention, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Ireti Kingibe. This is LEA Primary School, Idu Koro 2, Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT a public primary school where children are expected to learn in unacceptable conditions in 2026.”

According to the platform, pupils at the school are “sitting on a dusty, bare floor because there are not enough suitable desks and chairs.”

It added that the school building was visibly deteriorated, with “a severely damaged roof, exposed roofing structure, broken or missing windows and doors, and walls requiring urgent rehabilitation.”

“These are not the conditions under which any child should be expected to learn, especially in Nigeria’s capital territory,” MonITNG said.

The platform said the situation went beyond the lack of furniture, stressing that it also concerned the safety, dignity and future of children whose families depend on public education.

“This is about more than furniture. It is about the safety, dignity and future of children whose families depend on public education,” it said.

“A child should not have to sit on the floor simply because the government has failed to provide a basic learning environment.”

MonITNG also questioned whether public resources were adequately reaching communities such as Idu Koro 2, particularly in the area of basic education.

“The situation also raises legitimate questions about priorities and the use of public resources,” the platform said.

It noted that the FCT’s 2026 budget was approved at approximately ₦2.285 trillion, with about ₦1.741trillion allocated to capital projects.

“Residents should be able to ask whether the benefits of that investment are reaching communities such as Idu Koro 2 and improving essential public services, including basic education for everyone here,” MonITNG said.

The organisation also referenced the FCT Administration’s ongoing construction of residential accommodation for judges and justices, including 40 houses for judges across the FCT High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal High Court.

It acknowledged that “providing appropriate accommodation for judicial officers is a legitimate responsibility of government,” but stressed that basic public-school infrastructure should also receive urgent attention.

MonITNG called on Wike, the FCT Administration, education authorities and the Abuja Municipal Area Council to visit the school, assess its needs and commence comprehensive rehabilitation.

“This should include safe classrooms, functional roofing, doors and windows, adequate desks and chairs, and other essential learning facilities,” it said.

The platform further argued that Abuja’s development should not be measured only by major roads, city-centre projects and government buildings.

“Abuja’s development should not be measured only by major roads, city-centre projects and government buildings. It must also be measured by the condition of classrooms where children in satellite communities are being prepared for the future,” it said.

“These children deserve better. Their education cannot wait.,” MonITNG added.
