The Uganda Police Force has arrested 124 drivers during a nationwide operation targeting motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The police disclosed this in a post on X on Sunday, saying the operation was conducted across nine police divisions as part of efforts to curb road crashes linked to drink-driving.
According to the police, Katwe recorded the highest number of arrests, with 24 drivers apprehended, followed by Kawempe with 18 and Nansana with 16.
Kabalagala and Old Kampala recorded 14 arrests each, while Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) recorded 13.
Jinja Road accounted for 12 arrests, Kiira Road recorded seven, while six drivers were arrested in Nsangi.
The police said all 124 drivers were detained pending court proceedings scheduled for Monday.
The operation was announced by the Uganda Police Force through its spokesperson, who reiterated the force’s commitment to tackling dangerous driving and improving road safety.
“Our message is clear: If you drink alcohol, do not drive. Arrange for a sober driver or use a special-hire vehicle to get home safely,” the police stated.
The force warned that it would not allow motorists to endanger the lives of other road users through drink-driving.
“These operations will continue as part of our efforts to rid our roads of dangerous driving and make them safer for all road users,” the statement added.
Drink-driving remains a road safety concern, with police authorities using enforcement operations to deter motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol and reduce the risk of crashes.
