Law Graduates Association Demands Urgent Action Over Rising Fuel Prices, Hardship In Nigeria | Sahara Reporters
According to the association, recent reports indicate that petrol prices have risen to about ₦1400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, while prices have reached higher levels in some other parts of the country.
The Law Graduates Association of Nigeria (LAWGAN) has called on the Nigerian government to urgently intervene over the continued increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, warning that the development is worsening economic hardship across the country.
The association made the call in a press release signed by its President, Kayode Bello, and Public Relations Officer, Ojo Clement on Monday.
LAWGAN said it was expressing “deep concern” over the rising price of petrol and the impact of the development on Nigerians across different sectors of society.
According to the association, recent reports indicate that petrol prices have risen to about ₦1400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, while prices have reached higher levels in some other parts of the country.
It said the increase in the cost of petrol was affecting virtually every sector of the economy, including transportation, food, education, agriculture, businesses and household expenses.
“The rising cost of fuel has a direct impact on virtually every sector of the economy, including transportation, food, education, agriculture, businesses and household expenses,” LAWGAN said.
“The situation has consequently made it increasingly difficult for many Nigerians to meet their daily needs.”
The association expressed particular concern over the effect of the rising fuel prices on students and young Nigerians, who it said were already facing increasing costs of transportation, accommodation, feeding and other educational expenses.
“LAWGAN is particularly concerned about the impact on students and young Nigerians, who are already struggling with increasing transportation costs, accommodation, feeding and other educational expenses,” the statement said.
It stressed the importance of students to the country’s development, noting that they constitute an important part of Nigeria’s present and future.
“Students are an important part of the present and future development of Nigeria, and their welfare must not be overlooked,” the association said.
LAWGAN therefore called on the Nigerian government to take urgent and sustainable measures to reduce the burden created by the current fuel price, particularly for students, workers, low-income families and other vulnerable members of society.
“We therefore call on the Nigerian government to urgently intervene and take sustainable measures to reduce the burden of the current fuel price on Nigerians, particularly students, workers, low-income families and other vulnerable members of society,” it said.
The association also urged the government to ensure that its economic policies translate into improved welfare and better living conditions for Nigerians.
“LAWGAN believes that economic policies should ultimately improve the welfare and living conditions of the people,” the statement said.
It further urged the government to listen to the concerns of Nigerians and implement practical measures capable of making essential goods and services more affordable.
“We urge the government to listen to the concerns of Nigerians and take practical steps towards making essential goods and services more affordable,” LAWGAN said.
The association’s intervention comes amid concerns over the rising cost of living and the broader impact of fuel prices on transportation, food and other essential expenses.
