Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have killed two suspected kidnappers and armed robbers during a gun duel along Eziowelle Road in the state.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, saying the operation was carried out in the early hours of August 19, 2026, following credible intelligence on the movement of suspected members of a criminal gang.

According to the police, operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, mobilised to the area after receiving information that suspected armed robbers and kidnappers had been sighted along the road.

The police said the suspects opened fire on the police team after sighting the operatives, triggering a gun battle.

“During the ensuing encounter, two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while other members of the gang fled the scene with varying degrees of gunshot wounds,” Ikenga stated.

The police said their operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing four live rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun and five live cartridges from the scene.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Nnanna Oji Ama, said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and curbing kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes in the state.

The police said investigations have commenced, while efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing members of the gang. Further developments shall be communicated accordingly,” Ikenga said.
