Three UK airports operated by Manchester Airport Group have been hit by a cybersecurity incident in which the data of about 8.7 million customers was accessed.

Manchester Airport Group (MAG), which operates Manchester Airport, London Stansted Airport and East Midlands Airport, confirmed the incident but said passenger safety and aviation security were not compromised, according to The Guardian.

The company said it immediately contained the risk and was working with specialist advisers and relevant authorities to protect its customers and systems.

“We immediately contained the risk and have been working with specialist advisers and taking appropriate steps to protect our customers and systems. We have informed and are working with the relevant authorities,” a MAG spokesperson said.

“At no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised.”

The company said the incident had not caused any operational disruption, adding that airport operations and customer parking services continued normally.

MAG also said neither the company nor the system accessed during the incident held customers’ bank or payment details.

“We would like to reassure customers that Manchester Airport Group takes the security of customer information extremely seriously and we apologise for any inconvenience or concern caused,” the spokesperson added.
