Woman Arrested By Police For Allegedly Burying Grandchild Alive In Ghana | Sahara Reporters

A woman in her late 40s has been arrested for allegedly burying her grandchild alive at Akrofoso-Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The suspect, identified by residents as Akua Abrokwaa, allegedly buried the child immediately after birth, reportedly claiming that the father of the baby had refused to accept responsibility.

The incident came to light after residents reportedly became suspicious about the circumstances surrounding the birth and disappearance of the newborn.

According to a publication by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, the Assembly Member for the area, Quaino Dadzie, said residents alerted him after suspecting that something was wrong.

According to Dadzie, the discovery was made a day after the alleged burial.

He said he initially approached Abrokwaa to inquire about the whereabouts of the baby, but she allegedly denied that her daughter had given birth.

“I was informed by residents who suspected foul play in the whole incident. When I approached the woman, she said her daughter had not given birth but later admitted,” he said.

Dadzie explained that the matter was subsequently reported to the police, who accompanied the suspect to the location where the newborn had allegedly been buried.

“Police led her to the scene where the child was buried, and the body was exhumed,” he added.

The Assembly Member said the baby was already decomposing by the time the police recovered the body, suggesting that the child had been buried for some time before the discovery.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged burial have since triggered concern among residents of the community, particularly over the decision to dispose of the newborn in such a manner.

The identity of the child’s mother and the extent of the father’s alleged refusal to accept responsibility were not immediately disclosed.

The police have arrested Abrokwaa and taken her into custody, where she is currently assisting with investigations.

Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances leading to the child’s death, determine whether the baby was alive at the time of the alleged burial and establish the roles, if any, of other persons connected to the incident.

The case remains under investigation, and the suspect’s alleged actions have not been established in court.
