The White House has commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, honouring the 2,977 people who were killed in the attacks.

“A quarter of a century has passed since September 11, 2001, when the peace of our Nation was shattered by terrorists,” the White House said.

It honoured those who died and the first responders and other heroes who responded to the attacks, while expressing solidarity with their families.

“Today, we remember the 2,977 precious lives taken from us, honor the heroes who answered the call, & keep their families in the heart of our Nation,” it said.

The White House stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the attacks for future generations of Americans.

“Above all, we must ensure the memory of 9/11 never fades, but is carried from one generation of Americans to the next,” the post said.

The September 11 attacks were carried out in 2001 when members of the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York, another struck the Pentagon in Virginia, while a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the aircraft.
