Two Students Arrested After Six Guns Were Recovered From New York City Schools | Sahara Reporters
The figure followed the recovery of two handguns from two separate public schools in the city on Tuesday, with both incidents occurring within hours of each other.
Six firearms have been recovered from New York City public schools in the United States since the beginning of the school year in September, the union representing school safety officers has said.
The figure followed the recovery of two handguns from two separate public schools in the city on Tuesday, with both incidents occurring within hours of each other.
The first firearm was recovered at Eximius College Prep Academy at about 11:15 a.m.
According to reports, a school safety officer was alerted that a 15-year-old student had an outstanding arrest warrant.
The teenager was located and found in possession of a 9mm handgun and a magazine containing more than 20 rounds of ammunition.
Police took the student into custody following the discovery.
Later the same day, at about 2:07 p.m., officers responded to Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology after a 17-year-old student was found with a handgun.
Police have not released the names of either student because they are minors.
The two incidents brought the number of firearms recovered from New York City public schools since the start of the current school year to six, according to the school safety officers’ union.
The incidents have also raised questions about security measures at the affected schools, as neither Eximius College Prep Academy nor Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology has metal detectors.
The Department of Education had not responded to News 12’s request for comment on the firearm recoveries and security measures at the schools.
