Trump announced the planned White House visit after a video of Williams battling violent surf to save the child went viral, drawing widespread praise for the teenager’s courage.

United States President Donald Trump is set to welcome 16-year-old California lifeguard Ryder Williams to the White House on Monday after the teenager risked his life to rescue a 10-year-old boy from powerful waves at a Santa Cruz beach.

Trump announced the planned White House visit after a video of Williams battling violent surf to save the child went viral, drawing widespread praise for the teenager’s courage.

“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!” Trump wrote on his X account.

The dramatic footage showed Williams repeatedly being knocked beneath waves as he held on to the struggling child and fought to keep him above water.

Williams, a first-year lifeguard with California State Parks, had been on duty at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz on July 25 when he noticed the boy lose his footing in shallow water before being swept into the surf.

According to Williams, he immediately alerted other lifeguards, dropped his radio and sunglasses and ran into the water.

He eventually reached the child and held on to him despite the strength of the waves. Another lifeguard later joined the rescue and helped bring the boy safely back to shore.

California State Parks said the boy had been swept about 15 yards into the ocean. Reports said the waves were between eight and 10 feet high, with strong rip currents making the rescue particularly dangerous.

Williams later said the child had gone limp when he reached him and that his priority was to hold his position until another lifeguard could assist him.

“I was thinking, is he unconscious or not … the whole time I just need to hold my position till my partner can get there,” Williams said in an interview with NBC.

The rescued boy was identified by his father as 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai. His father, Sumit Rai, said the child had lost consciousness during the incident and described Williams’ actions as extraordinarily courageous.

“He risked his life to save my child,” Rai said, adding that Williams’ persistence and refusal to release the boy could have made the difference between life and death.

The rescue was captured on video by a beachgoer and subsequently spread widely online. The footage drew the attention of Trump’s son, Eric Trump, who called for the teenager to receive the country’s highest civilian honour.

“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!” Eric Trump wrote on X.

His post was followed by Trump’s announcement that Williams and his family would be invited to the White House, potentially alongside the boy he rescued.

Social media reactions have since described Williams as a symbol of courage and selflessness, with supporters praising him for placing the life of a child above his own safety.

One post accompanying the viral footage described him as a “real American hero”, while another said his actions represented “pure courage” and “pure selflessness.”

The reaction has also focused on Williams’ humility. Rather than portraying himself as a hero, the teenager has repeatedly described the rescue as part of his responsibility as a lifeguard.

“This is my job and I love what I do,” Williams said in a statement released by California State Parks. He also thanked fellow lifeguards who assisted him and noted that they perform rescues regularly.

🇺🇸 THIS is what a real American hero looks like!

Williams’ actions did not end with the rescue of Nathaniel. According to NBC Bay Area, he returned to his lifeguard tower and carried out four additional rescues that same day as dangerous surf continued along the coast.

The Santa Cruz district recorded 34 rescues during the weekend, according to California State Parks, underscoring the severity of the ocean conditions at the time.

The teenager’s recognition has also prompted attention to the training that prepared him for the rescue. Williams is in his first season as a lifeguard and had previously participated in the Santa Cruz County Junior Guards programme, which provides young people with ocean-safety and lifesaving skills.

His family has reportedly discouraged efforts to establish a fundraising campaign for him, instead encouraging supporters to contribute to the junior lifeguard programme that helped prepare him for the job.

While Trump’s planned ceremony has elevated the rescue to a national story, Williams has continued to downplay the attention, with reports saying he returned to his lifeguard duties shortly after the incident.

The White House recognition is expected to highlight not only Williams’ individual bravery but also the role of lifeguards and other emergency responders who routinely put themselves at risk to protect members of the public.

For the 10-year-old boy and his family, however, the significance of the teenager’s actions is more personal: Williams saw a child in mortal danger, entered hazardous water and refused to let go until help arrived.
