President Bola Tinubu has joined the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in a request seeking more time to process the release of records concerning his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

The development follows a court order mandating the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to disclose documents related to a 1993 investigation.

The judge ruled that the FBI and DEA failed to provide information to establish cognizable privacy interest exists in keeping secret the fact of the existence of the records.

The agencies had previously argued that releasing the documents could compromise ongoing investigations and expose confidential sources, but the court directed them to process the records in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Tinubu’s legal team has now aligned with the government’s motion for an extension, citing the complexity of the review process required before the documents can be made public.
