Tinubu congratulates President Lula on historic fourth-term victory in Brazil

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election for a record fourth term, expressing Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen bilateral relations with Brazil.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 26, 2026, Tinubu described Lula as his friend and said his renewed mandate presented an opportunity to deepen the longstanding relationship between both countries.

I congratulate my friend, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, on his re-election for a record fourth term.

Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with Brazil to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance shared interests across Africa and South America.

Lula, 80, secured his fourth non-consecutive presidential term after defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s closely contested runoff election.

According to Brazil’s electoral authorities, Lula won approximately 51.8 per cent of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.2 per cent.

Tinubu wished the Brazilian leader a successful new term on behalf of the Nigerian people.
