At least six people have died after a passenger ferry carrying about 270 people capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus.

CNN Turk, citing Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel, reported that six people had died in the incident. The number of injured and the condition of other passengers remained unclear as of Sunday.

The vessel is believed to be the catamaran-style Filo Jet, measuring more than 40 metres long and 10 metres wide. Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul said the vessel belonged to Filo Denizcilik ferry company.

According to Sky News, Maritime Traffic reportedly said the high-speed craft’s last signal was detected nearly three hours before the reports of the incident. The vessel was sailing under the Turkish flag.

Senkul told CNN Turk that 159 of 258 passengers had been reached, leaving 99 passengers unaccounted for. He said the total number of people aboard, including crew members, was 270.

In a Facebook post, Senkul said the passenger ship Diana Beach, belonging to the fleet, had sunk off the coast.

“There are a total of 270 people on board, including passengers and crew,” he said, describing the situation as “very serious.”

He added that coastal security teams were conducting rescue operations with numerous small boats alongside the Akgün Express ship.

Senkul urged the public to rely only on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports.

“We are having a tough day,” he wrote. “Please do not rely on any information outside of the official statement, and do not share it.”
