PTAD pays N3.82bn pension arrears to 30,356 retirees

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has disbursed N3.82bn in accrued pension arrears to 30,356 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme, following a review of their outstanding entitlements.
The payment, which covered pensioners across three departments of the Directorate, was made after the completion of a Back-End Computation Review Exercise designed to resolve complaints arising from pension calculations and unpaid benefits.
The beneficiaries were drawn from the Parastatals Pension Department, the Defunct and Transferred Agencies Pension Department, and the Tertiary, Education and Health Pension Department.
The total amount paid was N3.817bn, according to a statement issued by PTAD’s Head of Corporate Communications, Olugbenga Ajayi, on Friday.
The statement read, “The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has disbursed a total of N3.817bn in accrued pension arrears to 30,356 Defined Benefit Scheme Pensioners across the Parastatals Pension Department, Defunct and Transferred Agencies Pension Department, and Tertiary, Education and Health Pension Department.
“This payment represents accrued arrears arising from the Back-End Computation Review Exercise conducted by the Directorate to address and resolve complaints relating to pension computations and outstanding entitlements of DBS Pensioners.”
The Directorate said the payment was part of its efforts to address verified outstanding obligations owed to pensioners and improve the administration of the Defined Benefit Scheme.
The Back-End Computation Review Exercise was undertaken to identify and resolve discrepancies in pension computations and determine outstanding entitlements due to affected pensioners.
The exercise is particularly significant for retirees under the DBS, which covers pension arrangements for employees whose pension rights are administered under the pre-2004 pension system.
Unlike the Contributory Pension Scheme, which is managed through individual retirement savings accounts, the DBS operates under government-funded arrangements for eligible retirees and beneficiaries.

Odunaiya reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to ensuring that verified pension obligations were processed and paid in a timely and transparent manner.
She said the latest payment demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing pension-related challenges and improving the welfare of retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
“This payment reflects the commitment of the Administration of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, to addressing pension-related issues and strengthening pension administration under the Defined Benefit Scheme,” she said.

She also assured pensioners that PTAD would continue to engage them and address complaints concerning their pension entitlements.
The Directorate said the disbursement was not merely a financial transaction but part of its broader effort to restore confidence in the administration of pensions by ensuring that verified claims were properly assessed and settled.
PTAD said it would continue to engage with pensioners, resolve pension-related complaints and strengthen its processes for administering the Defined Benefit Scheme.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in the management and payment of pension entitlements.
The latest disbursement comes amid continuing efforts by the federal government and pension administrators to address outstanding pension obligations and improve the welfare of retirees.
The payment is expected to provide financial relief to the 30,356 beneficiaries whose arrears arose from the computation review exercise.
PTAD was established to administer the pension liabilities of the Federal Government under the Defined Benefit Scheme following the introduction of the Pension Reform Act and the transition to the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The Directorate is responsible for verifying pensioners, computing benefits, processing payments and resolving complaints relating to pensions under its mandate.
