Two adult men were rescued alive from the debris and taken to a nearby health facility after receiving first aid from personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service

A two-storey building has collapsed on Governors Road in Aboru, Lagos State, killing one man and trapping workers under the rubble during demolition activities on Thursday.

The incident occurred at about 12:56am at No. 42, Governors Road in Aboru, the Alimosho Local Government Area, after emergency responders received a distress call.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said a response team was immediately deployed to the scene.

Oke-Osanyintolu said responders found workers trapped beneath the collapsed structure when they arrived.

He said two adult men were rescued alive from the debris and taken to a nearby health facility after receiving first aid from personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

The LASEMA official also confirmed that the body of another adult male was recovered from beneath the rubble.

He said the preliminary assessment showed that the building collapsed while it was being manually demolished.

According to the statement, the rescue operation involved personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

The agencies continued searching the debris after the two survivors had been removed from the structure.

The Lagos emergency agency urged residents and property owners to comply with building regulations and engage certified professionals for construction and demolition work.

The warning followed the collapse during what authorities described as a manual demolition exercise.

Building collapses remain a recurring safety concern in Lagos, with another incident recorded in June when six people were rescued from a collapsed three-storey building in the Alakija area of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.

Emergency responders are expected to conclude operations at the Aboru site as authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
