Another security guard was also shot and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

A police officer, ASP Rotimi Richard Ajayi, has been detained after allegedly shooting and killing 26-year-old security guard Ayineka Ayomide Daniel at TSL Halogen Company in Itori, Ogun State, on October 14.

Another security guard was also shot and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The case has been transferred from Itori Police Station to the Eleweran Police Headquarters in Abeokuta for investigation. The officer is said to be in detention at Eleweran.

A staff member of the company, Mr. Abayomi, confirmed the incident and said the officer and the guards were working at the same location. He described the shooting as an “accidental discharge” and said the guards had suspected an intruder.

“It was just an accidental discharge. The two of them are security guards; the policeman was detailed to the location, while the security guard also works at that particular place,” he said.

“So, when they suspected that there was an intruder, it was even the deceased that went to call the police officer. So, in the process of them trying to combat the intruder, it was the security guard that was shot,” Aboyemi said.

He said the matter was already before the police and that the officer had been detained. He added that the Assistant Inspector General of Police from Zone 2 had directed a thorough investigation.

However, the family of the deceased gave a different account. The father, Mr. Ayineka Oluwashola, said the family was initially told that his son was fighting with a friend and had been injured. He said they later learnt that he had been shot.

“They said the MOPOL and civilian guard that were working in that company, that is the MOPOL that shot them. They are two in number. So they said in the night, armed robbers entered their working place. So they had to go and wake the MOPOL that was asleep already. Immediately they woke the MOPOL, they said he began shooting them. He shot my son in the neck; the other guy, he shot him in his two hands,” Oluwashola said.

He said the family went to Eleweran Police Headquarters, where they wrote a statement demanding justice. He said they were told the suspect was in detention but were not allowed to see him. He also said the family buried the deceased without an autopsy because his body had swollen.

The deceased’s younger sister, Miss Ayineka Folashade, said the surviving guard told the family that he and Ayomide had gone to wake the police officer because they suspected armed robbers were around. She alleged that the officer opened fire on them and that no armed robbers were caught.

She also said the company had not reached out to the family since the incident and did not send any representative when the deceased was buried.

“The company where my brother was working hasn’t even reached out to our family. I was even the one calling them for the death certificate,” she said.

The Ogun State Police Command did not respond to requests for comment. Its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, hung up after answering a call from SaharaReporters and did not respond to a text message seeking confirmation of the incident.
