A newborn baby girl has been rescued after she was found abandoned inside a sack at Obaretin Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to Tribune Online residents discovered the infant at about 7 a.m. on September 8, 2026, before alerting officers at the Ologbo Police Station. The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and said the baby was taken to a hospital for medical examination.

Ikoedem said medical personnel examined the newborn and certified her healthy after she was brought to the hospital.

She said the police had opened an investigation to identify the child’s parents and establish the circumstances that led to her being abandoned in the community.

The police spokesperson added that relevant authorities had been contacted to arrange safe shelter and appropriate care for the infant while efforts to trace her parents continue.

She appealed to residents who may have information about the identity or whereabouts of the baby’s parents to provide such information to the authorities.

Ikoedem assured that the investigation would continue to determine how the newborn came to be abandoned and to safeguard her welfare.
