NAHCON hails Otu, says Cross River a model of religious harmony

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has described Cross River State as a shining example of religious harmony in Nigeria, commending Governor Bassey Edet Otu for fostering peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Governor in Calabar, NAHCON’s Commissioner for Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, Prince Aliu Abdulrazaq, said the state was prioritised in the Commission’s nationwide sensitisation tour because of its “cordial relationship” with the Muslim community.
“Cross River is one of the first states which we are proud of. I have never heard of any issue of fighting between Muslims and Christians here. I really appreciate the governor for that,” Abdulrazaq declared.
The Zonal Coordinator for South-South/South-East, Alhaji Amin Ukoha, added that such support for Muslim pilgrims was “uncommon among governors in the South-South region”, noting that Governor Otu’s gestures set him apart.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to religious tolerance, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence.

“From the very beginning, Cross River State has been known for its culture of tolerance and acceptance. Welcoming and accommodating people from different backgrounds is part of who we are because Cross River is a cosmopolitan state,” the governor said.
He stressed that national unity must be deliberate, urging Nigerians to emulate the state’s example.
“If Christians can live peacefully in the northern part of the country, Muslims should also be able to live peacefully here in Cross River State. We are all the same people. We are all Nigerians and human beings. Therefore, what is good for you is good for us. We are one Nigeria,” Otu stated.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Cross River State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Imam Kabeer Olowolayemo, said the visit was to sensitise the Muslim community on the new Hajj guidelines and to appreciate the Governor’s “unwavering support”.
The delegation also met with the Special Adviser on Religious Matters, Apostle Frank Umo, who reassured them of the mutual coexistence enjoyed by all citizens in the state.
