President Bola Tinubu's recent visit to Enugu State was largely celebrated by the state government, with Governor Peter Mbah hosting him to commission various projects.
However, findings by SaharaReporters showed that some of these projects were not exactly completed or noteworthy.
For instance, a re-asphalted junction and an uncompleted Smart School building were among the projects commissioned.
SaharaReporters found out that the governor also recalled the patrol security vehicles already given to the police and other security agencies for display at the government house, just for the president's visit.
In reality, apart from the International Conference Centre (ICC), which was started by Governor Mbah's predecessor, Chimaroke Nnamani, and completed with minor work still ongoing, there weren't many tangible projects to speak of.
Even at the Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, where thousands of students were displaced for the construction of a Smart Green School, only one building was completed that President Tinubu commissioned, while most of the other classroom blocks were still under construction.
"What is happening in Enugu is the more you look, the less you see. All the patrol vehicles shared to police and other security agencies were recalled to the Government House for the vainglory. At the GTC only one block of classroom was completed while several others are still under construction yet he brought the president to commission it as a completed project," said a source who was at the commissioning ground on Saturday.
Remember that the governor announced that his administration would spend "N100 billion for Construction of 200 Integrated Model Smart School Comprising of 3 classroom block for Nursery, 6 classroom blocks for primary and 6 classroom blocks for junior secondary in the 250 wards in the 17 LGAs in the 2025 budget appropriation.
"N146billion was announced that will be spent for equipping of the smart school across the 260 political wards in the State.
"N10.7billion for Upgrading of 3 nos of State Public Secondary Schools, to smart High Secondary Schools (Structures) 1 -No in each of the 3 senatorial zones
"N10billion for Construction of smart senior secondary schools."
Speaking with SaharaReporters, former national Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one time commissioner for local government, Chief Raymond Nnaji, said that the governor could as well call the president to commission a kitchen in his village.
He regretted that the media was singing the praises of the state government neglecting their social responsibility, adding that such development was dangerous to everything in democracy.
"It is like the press covering Enugu State are docile because they have been bought over by the government and it is dangerous for our democracy. Dangerous to everything - they have been bought over, they don't look at things and say things the way they are with regard to the governance of the state.
"So what are we saying, the government is doing anything it likes. Whatever he likes the press will amplify it. So, I'm not surprised that he will commission the kitchen of his mother in the village and the press will carry it and it will become newsworthy.
"So, whatever he has done I am not surprised he did it. He is working fine but it is time that will determine whether the work he did is sufficient for people to assess him and grade him with distinction, credit, pass and failure. In a class where you have about 10 subjects and you scored distinction in two and failed in the other, cumulatively you have failed.
Meanwhile, according to the government statement, the uncompleted GTC Smart Green School commissioned by the president was symbolic.
The state government also claimed that the resurfaced Bisala - New Heaven roads junction commissioned by the president was symbolic for the 90 resurfaced urban roads in Enugu City.
"One hundred and fifty (150) patrol vehicles fitted with AI-embedded surveillance cameras at the Government House were commissioned."
