Nine-time Nigerian champions Enyimba FC have announced they have parted ways with head coach Yemi Olanrewaju with the club appointing former Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma as his replacement, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Enyimba announced the departure of the underfire Olanrewaju on Saturday, and it is not unconnected to the string of poor results they have recorded in the last two months, but pictures of Eguma’s unveiling at the club began to surface afterwards – even though the club is yet to make an official announcement.
“Enyimba FC can confirm that it has parted ways with head coach Yemi Olarenwaju,” the club said in an official announcement.
“The club thanks Coach Olarenwaju for his services and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.”
A source within the club revealed to PUNCH Sports Extra that Olanrewaju was sacked on Saturday, just after returning from Jos, where they had played a goalless draw against Plateau United in a rescheduled NPFL match-day 18 game while Eguma had been presented to the press in Aba.
“The whole thing happened on Saturday after the team returned from Jos. He was called and he was relieved of his duty and Eguma had also been appointed to replace him, even before Yema was sacked,” the source who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter told PUNCH Sports Extra.
Since beating Ikorodu City 2-1 on October 27, the Aba giants are winless in nine matches across all competitions, losing two of their opening three CAF Confederation Cup matches and currently 11th in the NPFL with 23 points after 15 matches (three games less than other teams).
Former Rivers United coach, Eguma, is set for another spell in the Nigeria Premier Football League as the new handler of nine-time champions.
Before he was sacked by Rivers United in May, Eguma was the longest-serving manager in the NPFL and guided the club to the 2021 NPFL title win. He was appointed in 2016 after sponsors; Rivers State Government merged Sharks FC and Dolphins FC to form Rivers United FC.
