… Latest tragedy part of wider environmental disaster as 3 slides hit city in 7 weeks
From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
Two persons have been confirmed dead after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall hit Ikot Effanga Community in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, in the early hours of Friday, 28th August 2026.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said the disaster involved the collapse of a refuse dump along Old Odukpani Road.
According to him, the collapsed refuse impacted a building reportedly constructed within a valley, resulting in the death of two occupants.
“The deceased, identified as Nfon Ime, male, and an yet-to-be-identified female, believed to have been in the building at the time of the incident, have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary,” he said.
“The Command is currently conducting an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident, while further investigation is ongoing. Members of the public are urged to remain calm and avoid speculation as efforts continue to establish the full facts,” he added.
The incident is the third landslide recorded in Calabar Municipality in the last seven weeks following weeks of torrential rainfall.
Other communities affected include Ikot Awatim, Boro Pit, and Anansa Road. The downpours have also led to multiple deaths and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
Residents have linked the repeated disasters to poor waste management, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and construction of buildings in valleys and water channels.
