California Won’t Seek Death Penalty Against Filmmaker Rob Reiner’s Son Accused Of Killing Parents | Sahara Reporters

California prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents.

Reiner, who turned 33 on Monday, faces two counts of first-degree murder and an additional allegation of lying in wait in connection with the deaths. He has pleaded not guilty.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision ahead of a court hearing on Tuesday, according to CNN.

“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Hochman said.

He added that the maximum sentence Reiner could receive would be “life without the possibility of parole.”

Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead from apparent stab wounds at their home in Brentwood, California, in December. Authorities arrested Nick Reiner hours later and charged him with their killings.

The court was also expected to consider whether to release grand jury transcripts that resulted in Reiner’s indictment on murder charges.

Hochman said Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, had strongly opposed releasing the transcripts.

“They basically have said that the disclosure to the public and the media of the details and evidence of the killing of their parents will cause them additional trauma and harm, and they have respectively asked for the court to keep the transcript sealed,” Hochman said.

Although prosecutors do not believe releasing the transcripts would prejudice the case, Hochman said they would leave the decision to the court.

Reiner remains charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents.
