BREAKING: Kaduna Resident Doctors Resume Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Kaduna State chapter, has resumed its indefinite strike action, which was initially declared in June 2025.

The industrial action had been suspended after the doctors granted the state government a two-month grace period to address outstanding contentious issues. That deadline has now expired without resolution.

In a statement jointly signed by the ARD President, Dr. Richard Daniel, and the General Secretary, Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi, the association announced the resumption of the indefinite strike, stressing that the government’s failure to meet its commitments left them with no alternative.

“The leadership of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) Kaduna State wishes to notify all the State hospitals management and the entire public on its resumption of indefinite strike on the 31/8/2025 by 12AM midnight,” it said.

“This motion is as contained in the communique that was recently submitted on the 15th August 2025 after an emergency congress meeting that was held virtually with its members on 14th August 2025.”

The doctors’ association noted that the “congress in its magnanimity urged members to continue work and allow the Government to holistically work towards addressing the 100% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) 2024 implementation among other lingering welfare demands by the end of the month (31st August 2025) despite exceeding the two months deadline (5th August 2025) as earlier signed on the MOU with the Government”.

“Failure to implement the said demands would leave the congress with no option but to down tool and resume its previously suspended indefinite strike. In this light, there was no adjustment to the demands as reflected in the August 2025 salary payment,” it added.

Earlier in August, the ARD, Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, issued a 12-day strike notice to the state government.

The doctors demanded the full implementation and payment of 100 per cent CONMESS 2024 as adjusted, with two-month arrears.

The President of the hospital chapter, Josiah Yakubu, stated that the association had unanimously decided during its congress to issue an ultimatum to the state government, effective Monday, August 18.
