Bandits reportedly opened fire on the vehicle conveying Alhaji Aminu Atiku Zurmi, a former chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area and Permanent Commissioner in Zamfara State, while he was travelling to Gusau, the state capital, on Saturday.

According to conflict reporter Bakatsine in a post on X, the attack occurred shortly after Sabon Garin Kaura community, between Unguwar Rogo and Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi.

One person identified as Alhaji Kabiru was reportedly killed in the attack.

Bakatsine said the former council chairman was travelling when the assailants opened fire on his vehicle.

The reporter expressed concern over the growing insecurity on roads across Zamfara State and the risks faced by residents travelling between communities.

“How long will people continue to risk their lives simply by travelling on roads in Zamfara?” Bakatsine asked.

The reporter also prayed for the deceased, saying, “May Allah forgive him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus and bring an end to this endless violence in Zamfara.”

The attack comes amid persistent insecurity in parts of Zamfara, where armed groups have continued to carry out attacks and kidnappings.

Zamfara State has become the epicentre of Nigeria’s banditry crisis, where armed groups routinely carry out kidnappings, cattle rustling, and deadly raids on rural communities.

What began as localised disputes over grazing land and cattle theft has escalated into organised violence, with criminal networks exploiting the state’s abundant gold deposits to finance their operations.

According to reports, illegal mining has not only enriched bandit groups but also drawn in transnational smuggling networks, linking Zamfara’s insecurity to broader regional crime economies.
