The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has accused President Bola Tinubu of using his proposed 90-day cost-of-living relief plan to deceive Nigerians ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.

The presidential election is 86 days away. Yet President Bola Tinubu’s National Economic Council has announced a cost-of-living plan that will run for 90 days. The arithmetic is plain: the plan ends after Nigerians have voted. After three and a half years of hardship, this government is asking families to carry another promise into the polling booth and wait for relief until the votes are counted.

Phrank Shaibu, the Director of Strategic Communication for the ADC presidential campaign, made these remarks during a press conference at the party secretariat in Abuja. He argued that the five priorities listed in the plan—food affordability, tax harmonisation, completion of key projects, removal of investment bottlenecks, and household support—are long-standing issues that should have been addressed much earlier in the administration’s tenure.

Shaibu further criticized the government’s track record, noting that previous promises of fuel discounts at NNPC stations had not materialized for many citizens. He challenged the administration to provide transparency regarding the eligibility criteria, budget, and payment arrangements for the proposed household assistance.

A government cannot put a 90-day deadline on hunger, the cost-of-living crisis and insecurity and call it an economic policy.

Additionally, the campaign council raised concerns regarding a registration form circulating under the name “Arise for Tinubu 2027,” which reportedly requests voter identification and bank details. Shaibu also questioned the President’s decision to launch his campaign in Kaduna, citing the state’s recent history of security challenges and civilian casualties from military operations.
