The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The National Peace Committee (NPC), chaired by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Retd.), has invited African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and the party’s National Chairman, Samuel Ajeigbe, to sign the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The committee said the accord became necessary amid a resurgence of hate speech, misinformation and personality-driven political discourse as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.

In separate letters dated August 6, 2026 and addressed to Sowore and Ajeigbe, the NPC said the peace accord signing ceremony would focus on promoting issue-based campaigns and discouraging violence and inflammatory rhetoric.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

According to the committee, the event is coming one day before the official commencement of political campaigns and rallies for the 2027 general elections, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed for Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The NPC said its Election Security Information (ESI) Hub has detected renewed trends capable of heightening political tensions as parties begin active mobilisation for the elections.

“These trends underscore the need for all registered political parties and their presidential candidates to recommit to issue-based campaigns, reject violence, hate speech and misinformation, and promote civility, respect for opposing views, and political debates centred on party manifestoes, programmes and policies,” the committee said.

The Peace Accord was introduced by the NPC in 2015 as an intervention aimed at curbing inflammatory political rhetoric and divisive campaigns ahead of elections.

The committee said the initiative was subsequently strengthened with the signing of the First and Second Peace Accords in 2019, which focused on issue-based campaigns, peaceful democratic transitions and credible elections.

The invitation to the AAC leadership comes as Nigeria’s political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential and other elections, with campaigns expected to intensify in the coming months.

The committee urged political actors to commit themselves to peaceful political competition and avoid rhetoric that could provoke violence or deepen divisions among Nigerians.

Sowore, a prominent critic of successive Nigerian governments, is participating in the presidential contest on the platform of the AAC, while Ajeigbe is the party’s national chairman.

The NPC asked both party officials to confirm their attendance through Barrister Asabe Ndahi or Reverend Father Atta Barkindo at the Kukah Centre, which serves as the committee’s secretariat.

The development comes against the backdrop of growing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, raising concerns among civil society groups and election stakeholders over the potential impact of online misinformation, hate speech, and increasingly confrontational political campaigns.
