President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Babangida had impacted the country in ways that distinguished his administration in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu acknowledged the controversies surrounding Babangida’s years in power but said his eight-year administration had produced enduring effects on the country’s political, economic and geographical development.

Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has.

His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape, Mr Tinubu claimed.

He said Mr Babangida expanded Nigeria’s economy, established enduring infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continued to serve the national interest, according to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today.

The President noted that General Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his many contributions to national development.

Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations.

Tinubu wished the former military President continued good health, strength and longevity as he marks his 85th birthday.

May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come.
