China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing firmly opposes the weaponisation of outer space, describing the development as a threat to global strategic stability.

China has warned the United States against turning outer space into a “battlefield” after Washington confirmed for the first time that it has weapons deployed in orbit above the Earth.

The warning was issued on Tuesday amid growing concerns over the militarisation of space and a possible arms race involving major global powers.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing firmly opposes the weaponisation of outer space, describing the development as a threat to global strategic stability.

Responding to the US confirmation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China supports the peaceful use of outer space and wants it kept safe from military confrontation.

“China stands for peaceful use of the outer space and keeping it safe, and opposes any arms race in outer space or any attempt to weaponize it and turn it into a warzone,” Guo stated in a post on X.

He urged Washington to halt what Beijing described as its military build-up in outer space.

“We urge the U.S. to stop its military build-up in the outer space, and uphold global strategic stability with concrete actions,” the spokesperson said.

Russia also warned against the militarisation of space, saying outer space must remain free from weapons.

The reactions from Beijing and Moscow came after the United States confirmed that it has arms deployed in orbit, marking a significant development in the increasingly contested military domain beyond Earth.

The deployment has raised concerns that space could become the next major arena of military competition between the world’s leading powers.
