Nigerian Army Redeploys Senior Officers, Appoints New Theatre Commander For North-East | Sahara Reporters

The changes were approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, and are aimed at aligning the Army’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment.

The Nigerian Army has approved the strategic redeployment of several senior officers to key command, operational and staff positions as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and enhance national security.

The changes were approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, and are aimed at aligning the Army’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment.

The statement was signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The Nigerian Army said the exercise prioritises critical operational theatres and strategic appointments to ensure that officers with the required leadership experience and expertise are deployed to positions where they can deliver decisive effects.

A major change in the latest postings is the appointment of Major General IA Ajose as the new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK).

Ajose, who previously served at the Army Headquarters (AHQ), Department of Army Operations, is taking over the leadership of the military formation responsible for counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

His deployment comes as the Nigerian military continues operations against insurgency and other security threats affecting the region.

Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served under OPHK, has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC), where he will serve as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.

Similarly, Major General AM Alechenu has been moved from the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, while Major General RT Utsaha has been redeployed from the AHQ Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to the DHQ Garrison as Commander.

The Army also announced changes involving its training, civil-military affairs, finance and pension institutions.

Major General AM Umar has been redeployed from the AHQ Department of Civil-Military Affairs (DCMA) to the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN), where he will serve as Commandant.

His replacement at the AHQ DCMA is Major General UM Alkali, who is moving from the Army War College Nigeria to take up the position.

Major General GS Muhammed, who was previously with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has been posted to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation (NAFIC) as Director General.

Major General JE Osifo is moving from NAFIC to the Military Pension Board (MPB), where he will serve as Chairman.

The Army also redeployed Major General IE Ekpenyong to the DHQ Department of Defence Logistics as Director Engineering Services.

At the operational level, Brigadier General AA Bello has been moved from the 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the DHQ Department of Defence Operations.

Brigadier General MS Adamu has been redeployed from the Nigerian Army Women Command to the newly established 8 Brigade as Commander.

Brigadier General MS Sule is also moving from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to 27 Task Force Brigade as Commander.

Further changes saw Brigadier General I Sule redeployed from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to the 6 Division Garrison as Commander.

Brigadier General E Azenda has been moved from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to the 2 Division Garrison as Commander, while Brigadier General AS Bugaje moves from the 2 Division Garrison to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director Administration.

The COAS charged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence reposed in them through exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty.

He also tasked them with remaining relentlessly focused on the constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authority in maintaining peace and security.

The Nigerian Army said the latest redeployments were part of its broader effort to maintain a dynamic leadership and force-employment framework capable of responding to contemporary and emerging security threats.

According to the Army, the new structure is expected to enhance operational outcomes, strengthen joint and inter-agency coordination and improve the Service’s capacity to respond decisively to security challenges.

It said the changes would further support the achievement of Nigeria’s national security objectives.
