Police Arrest 31-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Cyberbullying, Intimidation Of Adamawa First-Class Chief | Sahara Reporters

According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the suspect allegedly created and circulated social media posts containing accusations against the traditional ruler.

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Buriba Israel, over alleged cyberbullying and criminal intimidation of First-Class Chief Hamman Bachama, Daniel Samaila, in Yola South Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said Israel, a resident of Jambutu in Yola South, was arrested after a formal complaint over his alleged activities on social media.

According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the suspect allegedly created and circulated social media posts containing accusations against the traditional ruler.

The command said the publications were considered offensive and capable of damaging the monarch’s reputation and dignity.

The police said relevant electronic devices and other materials linked to the alleged offences have been recovered from the suspect. The items, according to the command, are undergoing forensic examination as investigators continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged cyberbullying.

The command also warned that freedom of expression does not permit the unlawful use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate or defame individuals and institutions.

“The use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate, defame, or deliberately circulate harmful content against individuals or institutions will not be tolerated,” the command said.

The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa, Kabir Hassan, has directed investigators to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations.

The police said Israel would face the law if the investigation establishes his culpability.

The command said the case forms part of its efforts to protect traditional institutions, maintain public order and prevent the use of digital platforms for criminal intimidation and other unlawful activities.
