65 Nigerians Set to Return from South Africa Amid Anti-Foreigner Tensions

Another 65 Nigerians are scheduled to return home from South Africa today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, amid continuing concerns over anti-foreigner attacks and tensions affecting migrants in the country.
According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the returnees are being sponsored by private individuals. They are expected to depart Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 3:30 p.m. local time aboard South African Airways and arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 8:45 p.m.
The latest group follows the return of Nigerian nationals in recent weeks as concerns over xenophobic and anti-migrant sentiments have increased. The Federal Government had previously completed a voluntary repatriation exercise that brought more than 1,500 vulnerable Nigerians back from South Africa.
The development highlights the continuing safety concerns faced by some foreign nationals in South Africa and the importance of diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to protect Nigerians living abroad. The involvement of private sponsors has also demonstrated the role of individuals and communities in supporting Nigerians who wish to return home safely.
