S’African authorities probe death of Nigerian content creator

The South African authorities have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a Nigerian content creator, Nwobu Odera, who reportedly died on Sunday after suffering health complications linked to high blood pressure.

According to a viral video made by his companion, who identified himself simply as Daddy Billly, the deceased had experienced a severe health scare three days earlier when his heart began racing uncontrollably.

He said he was rushed to a pharmacy, where he was attended to and was given medication, which stabilised his condition at the time.

He, however, noted that a distress call was received on Sunday night, indicating that Odera could no longer move and appeared lifeless.

He said, “Three days ago, apparently, Odera had an attack where his heart was beating so fast, you could even see it. So, he was taken to the pharmacy, and the BP was checked, and it was about 171. The pharmacist told him that if he had wasted time, he would have had a stroke. They gave him some medications, and he took them and became stable. So, yesterday, being Sunday again, he went out. So, I think somewhere along the line, Odera did not take the BP tablet, and from yesterday evening, he started complaining about weakness.

“When we walked a little bit, he said, No, I am tired. I can’t walk for too long. No one remembered to ask him if he had taken his tablet. It escaped everyone’s mind.

We later went to a club, and from there, everyone left, and much later, we got a call that Odera could not move again. We could not move because this is South Africa, and there are procedures; you can’t just take someone that you see who is almost lying lifeless in your car. We had to wait for the ambulance. The ambulance came and confirmed him dead,” he added.

He further explained that South African law mandates an autopsy for deaths involving young persons who pass away outside a medical facility or without a known critical illness.

He therefore noted that investigators have insisted on conducting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

“As we speak, Odera died mysteriously. According to South African law, he is still very young, and he died not in a hospital or with a serious illness… so an autopsy must be conducted. In the next four or five days, the result of the autopsy will be out.”\

He also addressed circulating rumours suggesting that Odera’s death was a prank.

“What made me do this video is that people are calling me and saying it is a prank and that Odera is still alive. When the result comes out, I will post it so everyone will see the cause of his death,” he said.

BBC Pidgin also confirmed the death of Odera, adding that the development was confirmed to the news platform by the deceased’s manager.
