According to the Nigerian Police Academy admission list obtained by SaharaReporters, no fewer than 60 names were sponsored by the Senate President, his deputy, Jibrin Barau, and other top lawmakers.
The infamous Nigerian Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has gifted 60 admission slots in the 2025 Nigerian Police Academy intake to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, his deputy, and other influential lawmakers, SaharaReporters has gathered.
According to the Nigerian Police Academy admission list obtained by SaharaReporters, no fewer than 60 names were sponsored by the Senate President, his deputy, Jibrin Barau, and other top lawmakers.
The list reveals that Akpabio personally nominated seven candidates, six of whom are from Akwa Ibom — his home state — and one from Nasarawa.
“These names are sponsored by the Senate President,” the document clearly stated.
Similarly, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin was allocated five slots, all of which were filled by candidates from Kano State.
Also listed is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, who was allotted four candidates, all from Jigawa State.
The remaining slots were distributed among other senators, including Sen. Akintunde Yunus Abiodun, Sen. Abbas Aminu Iya, Sen. Amos K. Yohanna, Sen. Babangida Hussaini Uba, and Sen. Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua—each with multiple nominees.
Other sponsors on the list include several prominent lawmakers and senior officials within the National Assembly.
They are: Senator Rufai Hanga, the Chief of Staff to the Senate President, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, Senator Williams Eteng Jonah, Senator Diket Satso Plang, Senator Samaila Dahuwa Kaila, Senator AbdulFatai Buhari, and Senator Abba Moro.
Others are; Senator Ipinsagba Olajide Emmanuel, Senator Aniekan Bassey, Senator Kamorudeen Olalere Oyewumi, Senator Ali Sharafadeen Abiodun, and Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, a top source in the police academy lamented how the IGP Egbetokun had bastardised the admission process, bringing in candidates from top lawmakers and cronies just to perpetuate his "illegal stay in office."
Only in August, SaharaReporters exclusively reported the storm of controversy in the Nigeria Police Force over preferential promotions including for one Bukola Kuti, who was allegedly romantically involved with Egbetokun.
The police sources had decried rising favouritism in the Force under Egbetokun's sit-tight leadership.
Sources had at that time told SaharaReporters that the Police Service Commission was reluctant to publish the full list due to widespread allegations of nepotism—particularly that 30 of the 38 officers promoted are of Yoruba descent.
The IGP’s office, once expected to be a sanctuary of integrity and leadership, has become a theatre of petty rivalries, manipulation, and moral collapse.
SaharaReporters had also reported that the Police Service Commission (PSC) had approved the special promotion of 37 senior police officers handpicked by Egbetokun, but internal uproar within the force had stalled the public announcement of the list.
SaharaReporters had gathered that the promotions, largely considered controversial, sparked ethnic and institutional tensions within the Nigeria Police Force.
The development had also sparked discontent across various police commands, particularly among officers who believe they were overlooked for promotion despite being qualified, allegedly due to ethnic considerations.
