The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Citizens’ Liberties Committee chaired by human rights lawyer, Nuhu Egya, will on Thursday be in Kano state to attend the trial of some #EndBadGovernance protesters at Nomansland Magistrate Court.
Other members of the NBA committee including human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju and other prominent human rights lawyers who are members of the committee will also pay a solidarity visit to protesters in prison in the state.
The committee aims to safeguard the rights and liberties of individuals, particularly those in detention facilities. It works closely with NBA branch human rights committees, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary to ensure the protection of human rights and uphold the rule of law.
The 25-member committee include Nuhu Egya (Chairman), Malachy Ugwumadu (Alternate Chair), Stanley Damabide, Inibehe Effiong (Secretary), Chioma Iwueze, Oladele Oladejo, Deji Adeyanju, Hadiza Nasir Ahmad and Maxwell Opara.
“The NBA Civil Liberties Committee chaired by comrade Nuhu Egya, Deji Adeyanju and other prominent human rights activists as members will be in Kano State on Thursday to attend the trial of some protesters; and thereafter visit the Chief Judge of the state and subsequently pay a solidarity visit to protesters in prison.
“You will recall that Kano State has the highest number of protesters arrested by security agencies,” one of the committee members told SaharaReporters.
Confirming the information, Adeyanju told SaharaReporters that by 2pm, they will be at Nomansland Magistrate Court to attend the trial, after which, they will visit Goron Dutse Prison to see the detained protesters. From there, they plan to visit the Chief Judge of Kano State for a discussion and thereafter, visit Kano Central Prison to also see detainees.
According to an update shared with SaharaReporters, the protesters were represented by a coalition of legal professionals from the Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo Branch, the NBA Kano Branch, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Yusha'u Sani Yankuzo, Esq, from CEFSAN, confirmed that the case had been adjourned to September 18, 2024, for further mention.
Many people were arrested and detained by President Bola Tinubu’s administration over their alleged role in the 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.
SaharaReporters had reported that a Senior Magistrate Court in Kano State, presided over by Ibrahim Abubakar Mansur at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano, on Friday September 13, granted bail to 48 protesters.
However, each of the 48 individuals granted bail was ordered to deposit N1,000,000 (One Million Naira) at the Registry of the Kano State High Court and provide two reliable sureties.
