Tributes have poured in for Ahmed Musa after the former Super Eagles captain announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, bringing to an end a 15-year career that established him as Nigeria’s most capped men’s international and one of the country’s most successful modern players, The PUNCH reports.

The Nigeria Football Federation led the reaction, saluting Musa’s achievements and longevity with the national team.

In a statement shared on X, the federation wrote, “Thank you, Captain. 111 caps. AFCON Champion. World Cup history-maker. Ahmed Musa bows out a Super Eagle forever.”

Kano Pillars, where Musa currently serves as general manager and remains registered as a player, also paid tribute in a detailed statement.

The club described his international career as “illustrious”, adding that his “consistency, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the green and white jersey have earned him a permanent place in the annals of Nigerian football history”.

The National Sports Commission also acknowledged Musa’s contribution, describing his retirement as the close of a historic chapter.

In its statement, the commission said, “Musa’s decision marks the end of one of the most illustrious chapters in Nigerian football history. The Commission acknowledges Ahmed Musa’s immense contribution to Nigerian football and wishes him continued success in the next chapter of his journey.”

Several current and former Super Eagles players took to social media to honour the former captain.

Defender Kenneth Omeruo wrote, “Mi Captain Ahmed Musa, thank you for your service sir,” while striker Sadiq Umar added, “No words but thank you.” Moses Simon also paid tribute, saying, “Thank you for everything skipo.”

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and Eagles B forward Benard Ovoke echoed similar sentiments, both posting, “Happy retirement, Legend.”

Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad reflected on Musa’s biggest moments on the world stage, writing, “From those two unforgettable goals against Messi’s Argentina on the world’s biggest stage, to countless other beautiful moments in the green and white, Ahmed Musa gave his all to the Super Eagles and to Nigeria. Thank you for the memories, the goals, the sacrifices and the inspiration to a whole generation.”

Musa earlier announced his retirement on Wednesday, saying he was stepping away from international football with peace and gratitude after serving Nigeria for nearly 15 years.

At club level, he remains with Kano Pillars, having returned in October 2024 for a third stint and taking on the role of general manager ahead of the 2025–26 season.
