The Coordinator of the Women-In-Surveying Federal Capital Territory chapter, Abuja, Mrs Ajoke Akintola, has urged Nigerian women to actively engage in the built environment to accelerate national development.

This appeal was made during the annual Women-in-Surveying seminar in Abuja recently with the theme: “Inspiring the Career Woman; Positioning Her for Excellence”.

Highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment in the surveying profession, Akintola stated, “The contributions of women in the surveying profession and beyond have increasingly proven to be invaluable.”

She emphasised that increased female participation would enhance productivity and improve gender balance within the industry, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory.

A senior lecturer at the Department of Geomatics, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Dr Moses Mefe, who was the guest speaker, urged the Federal Government to provide more support for the surveying profession.

“The involvement of women in the surveying profession will impact technological advancement in Nigeria,” he asserted.

He added that such inclusion was vital for achieving a balanced and progressive workforce.

The General Manager of the Abuja Investment Company Limited, Dr Maureen Tamuno, represented by Company Secretary, Adah Amadi, also encouraged women to intensify their efforts in advancing their careers.

“We must redouble our efforts in the advancement of our profession,” Amadi noted.

She reinforced the need for commitment from female professionals in surveying.

Participants at the seminar expressed the belief that if relevant stakeholders support women in the surveying profession, it could catalyse essential developments across the nation.

Many attendees voiced optimism about the future of women’s roles in surveying, recognising that a more inclusive environment is key to driving innovation and progress.

In her welcome address, Akintola emphasised the seminar’s purpose, stating, “Today, we gather to share insights, experiences, and strategies that will inspire each one of us to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

She encouraged attendees to engage deeply with the programme, network, and think critically about creating a supportive atmosphere for women in surveying.
