Police bust suspected cult group in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Police Command has dismantled a suspected cult network known as “Sai Malam” and uncovered a WhatsApp-based recruitment channel used to lure young people into the group.

In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, said three suspects, including the alleged coordinator, Usman Shu’aibu, were arrested late Friday during a sting operation carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit following what he described as “credible intelligence.”

According to the police, the group had been quietly expanding across parts of the state, using a WhatsApp group called Red Chamber to recruit and indoctrinate unsuspecting youths.

Investigators said the suspects admitted they were initiated through the digital platform, which officers believe was “deliberately created” to draw young people into harmful activities under the guise of secret powers and group loyalty.

Announcing the breakthrough, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa said the operation was in direct response to rising public concern.

“We want the people of Sokoto to know that we hear them.

“This arrest is a clear signal that we are dismantling criminal structures wherever they hide, whether on the streets or online.

“Our priority remains the safety of every resident,” Musa said.

Rufai warned that criminal groups are increasingly exploiting social media to influence and mislead young people.

“The discovery of the ‘Red Chamber’ shows how digital platforms can be misused to manipulate innocent youths. We urge parents to pay closer attention to their children’s online activities and report anything unusual,” he said.

The command said a manhunt is underway for additional members of the network who fled during the operation, assuring residents that further arrests are expected.
