The Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, who confirmed the accident in a press statement on Wednesday, said four males were involved in the accident, while attributing the cause of the fatal crash to a loss of control by the truck driver.
Onabe said while one male adult sustained injuries and received first aid treatment before being moved to the hospital, one male adult was killed and two other males were rescued unharmed.
She said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps RS5.33 Nteje Unit Command responded to a serious road traffic crash that occurred on the Nteje-Awka road at Igbariam Junction around 14:40hrs.
“The call was received at 14:45 hours, and the rescue team arrived on the scene within five minutes, at 14:50 hours.
“Two vehicles were involved: a red Sino trailer (commercial, registration unavailable) driven by an unidentified male, belonging to Coca-Cola, and an ash-colored Daihatsu Hijet bus (commercial, registration unavailable) also driven by an unidentified male, belonging to ASTMA.
“Four males were involved; one male adult sustained injuries and received first aid before being transported to the hospital, while another male adult was killed. Two other males were rescued unharmed.
“The cause of the fatal crash was attributed to a loss of control of the trailer.
“According to eyewitnesses, the ASTMA bus stopped to arrest a vehicle that was parking on the road. Upon getting close, they discovered it was having tyre issues, so one of them left to get a vulcanizer for it.
“The Sino truck was attempting to maneuver when one of its tyres caught up with the bus and dragged it into the gutter, trapping the bus under the trailer.”
She added that the Sector Commander, FRSC Anambra State, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, who was present at the crash scene with the Corridor 5 Commander and the Nteje unit Commander, expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
“We deeply regret this tragic loss and commend the swift action of our officers. This incident underscores the urgent need for all drivers to observe speed limits, avoid reckless maneuvers, and maintain full control of their vehicles at all times.
“Upon arrival, the FRSC rescue team extricated the trapped occupants. The injured victim was rushed to Chira Hospital, Awkzu, for emergency medical care, while the deceased was taken to Jerusalem Hospital, Nteje. The trailer was lifted by an RCC crane to clear the scene, and the road was freed of obstruction shortly thereafter.
“The FRSC Anambra Command’s priority is to save lives and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible. We will continue enforcing traffic laws and educating the public to prevent similar incidents,” she added.
