A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing the Iwajowa constituency, Anthony Ogunsola, has urged participants and supporters at the Ogunsola Football Competition to prioritise peace and sportsmanship.

Speaking at the event on Monday in ADS Basic School playing Ground, Iwere-Ile, Ogunsola emphasised that the competition should serve as a platform for unity and youth development.

“This competition represents more than just sports; it celebrates unity, youth development, and community progress,” Ogunsola stated.

“We conceived this competition with three primary objectives: to discover and promote talents, to foster unity among our youths, and to inspire community spirit and development.”

However, Ogunsola expressed concern over reports of unnecessary disputes and crises during matches as contained in a statement he signed and made available to journalists on Tuesday.

“Sportsmanship thrives on discipline and respect for one another. We must never allow personal grudges or bad attitudes to overshadow the purpose of this initiative.”

He urged players, supporters, and community members to embrace peace at all times.

“Sports should unite, not divide us. Let us resolve that from today forward, we will be ambassadors of peace, both on and off the pitch”, Ogunsola emphasised.

The competition saw the participation of eight teams with 144 players. Arikose FC Ijio emerged victorious, defeating Iwere-Ile United FC 1-0 in the final match.

Ogunsola commended the organisers, participants, and supporters for their contributions to the success of the event. He reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote youth empowerment, unity, and the development of Iwajowa Local Government.

“Together, we will build a brighter future for our people,” he concluded.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including a former chairman of Iwajowa LG, Jelili Oyinloye; Abiodun Babalola, representing Ibadan North East, Lekan Abiola, representing Akinyele 1 State Constituency at the Oyo State House of Assembly, the PDP Chairman of Iwajowa LG, Wasiu Fasola and the Gegun of Ayetoro Ile, HRM Oba Rasheed Omobolanle among others.
