One person lost his life while five others including a mother and her four children sustained injuries in an accident that occurred along the Benin-Asaba Expressway on Thursday.
PUNCH Metro gathered from a Facebook post by the Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and Youth Mobilization to Delta State Governor, Harrison Gwanishu, that the accident occurred when a Siena vehicle conveying the victims rammed into a moving truck.
A video of the accident scene showed the Siena vehicle with a damaged bonnet and shattered windscreen.
According to Gwanishu, a female passenger seated in the front seat of the vehicle died at the spot of the accident.
He said, “I have just witnessed a tragic accident on the Benin-Asaba Expressway involving a Toyota Sienna traveling from Lagos to the East. The vehicle, which was transporting a family, collided with a moving truck, resulting in the death of the female passenger in the front seat.
“I assisted in rescuing a woman and her four children, who were receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.”
Gwanishu noted that the injured victims were rescued to a hospital in Asaba, the state capital while urging members of the public to help in identifying families of the victims.
He also urged travelers to always caution their drivers to avoid reckless driving.
“I commend the prompt response of the FRSC Delta State/Issele Office. The rescued mother and children are in critical condition and are being treated at ST Theresa Hospital Issele-Uku. Families can locate the hospital from Asaba by entering the bus and stopping at Issele-Uku Junction.
“As you journey back from the Christmas holiday, I urge you to talk to your driver to exercise caution and avoid reckless driving,” Gwanishu stated.
