One yet-to-be-identified male adult lost his life while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries in an accident along the Abeokuta Sagamu Expressway on Saturday.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a traffic update by the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, on Sunday, that the accident occurred after the vehicle conveying the victims had a burst tyre.
According to Ogunyemi, the tyre blowout caused the vehicle to somersault and swerve out of the expressway leading to the death of one of the passengers while seven others were injured.
He added that the accident occurred at about 5 pm on Saturday and identified the vehicle involved as one OPEL Sakura with number plate ABJ 486.
Ogunyemi said, “Fatal RTA/RTC at Adedero village inbound Abeokuta at a close to the PMB Estate Kobape -Siun area along the Sagamu Interchange.
“According to the driver, it was caused by a burst tyre which resulted in the vehicle somersaulting and swerving outbound Abeokuta.
“Eight persons were occupants of the vehicle including five female and three male adults, seven persons were injured including five female and two male while one male adult died.”
The TRACE CG noted that the injured victims were rescued at a nearby hospital with the assistance of the wife of the state governor.
“Her Excellency, the First Lady assisted in rescuing accident victims to the hospital and TRACE operatives strategically positioned to monitor traffic control,” Ogunyemi stated.
PUNCH City round reported on Saturday that no fewer than four people have lost their lives, while 16 others narrowly escaped death in two separate accidents along the Ogun State corridors of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incidents occurred near Kara Bus Stop, Isheri Olofin, and the Saapade Overhead Bridge.
The state police command stated that the Boxing Day accident at Kara Bus Stop around 5 pm involved a hit-and-run driver and two unidentified male pedestrians who were attempting to cross the expressway without proper caution.
Similarly, on the same day at around 4:14 pm, a lone accident occurred along the Sapaade stretch of the expressway involving a Toyota Hiace bus with the number plate LAGOS LSR585YH, resulting in the deaths of two passengers and injuries to 16 others.
The bus, reportedly carrying about 18 passengers, suffered a rear tyre burst and somersaulted after the driver lost control while heading to Ibadan.
