They alleged that the suspect had been boasting about his imminent release, citing strong backdoor support and financial influence.
The grieving family of 24-year-old Saheed Shoboyejo, who was brutally murdered two months ago in the Osuke community of Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, has accused a retired Commissioner of Police and a church of trying to obstruct justice in the ongoing investigation.
During a press briefing in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday, the family expressed dismay over delays in prosecuting the prime suspect, despite what they described as overwhelming evidence linking him to the crime.
They alleged that the suspect had been boasting about his imminent release, citing strong backdoor support and financial influence.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier ordered the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos to transfer the case to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Abuja.
Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, also assured the public that thorough investigations would be carried out.
However, the family said they are troubled by the seeming foot-dragging in bringing the suspect to court.
Olusoji Jinadu, a family representative, stated: “We want to appeal to the Inspector General of Police to come to our aid, as we are aware that the Police at the SIU are under intense pressure to release the suspect. Within two weeks of taking over the case, the SIU had enough evidence to arraign him and even informed us they would do so. But nothing has happened.”
Jinadu further disclosed that during a site investigation in Lagos by SIU detectives, a female Police Inspector, said to be romantically involved with the suspect, was also linked to the case and invited for questioning in Abuja.
“But despite this progress, the suspect has been boasting that with money, he will regain his freedom. We have credible information that a retired Commissioner of Police and a church, which the suspect claims to be affiliated with, are actively working behind the scenes to secure his release,” Jinadu alleged.
The family urged IGP Egbetokun to ensure that the suspect is promptly arraigned and that justice is served.
“Our demand is simple: the suspect should face the full weight of the law. We cannot allow the killer of our son to walk free because of influence or money,” Jinadu added.
