Nuno wants Awoniyi return for Newcastle clash

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo is hopeful striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be available for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria international missed Forest’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham last weekend due to concussion protocols after suffering a broken nose in a clash of heads during their FA Cup victory over Exeter City.

“We didn’t have the clearance from the Premier League about the concussion protocols so he was not able to go in the squad,” Nuno said.

“I hope he will be OK for the next one. He is feeling fine, it is about making sure we follow the protocols. He was OK but we have to respect the protocols.”

The 26-year-old has been fitted with a protective mask for his broken nose but must wait for clearance under the 12-day concussion protocol before returning to action.

Forest have struggled in Awoniyi’s absence, losing their last two away games as they aim to maintain their grip on a Champions League spot. The Reds have picked up just two wins in their last five league games.

The striker’s return would be a significant boost for Forest ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Forest will also welcome back winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who returned to action at Craven Cottage after missing three games with a groin problem.

However, backup goalkeeper Carlos Miguel faces several weeks out after picking up an injury against Exeter, with Wayne Hennessey taking his place on the bench.
