Gyan tips Nigeria for AFCON 2025 title

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has identified Nigeria as one of the favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be played in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ghana have failed to qualify for the upcoming tournament, and Gyan believes the Super Eagles will be in contention for the title against hosts Morocco and defending champions Ivory Coast.

Having just failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the Super Eagles are expected to fight for a fourth continental title in Morocco next month.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 CAF Awards in Morocco on Wednesday, Gyan said Nigeria should be motivated by their recent failure and last edition’s disappointment.

“I think we’ve got a lot of giants who are going there. Ghana is out which we are very disappointed about, but it is okay, we have qualified for the World Cup. Nigeria did well; they were close the last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams,” Gyan said on the red carpet.

“Morocco is also a strong contender that is doing well. I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast and Morocco are favourites.”

Nigeria are in Group C, where they will play Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.

The Super Eagles will face Tanzania on December 23, Tunisia four days later, and Uganda in their last group game on December 30.

Nigeria last won the AFCON in 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi after wins in 1980 and 1994.
