Nigeria’s oldest cricket league and one of the longest-running in West Africa, the Club Cricket Committee Lagos league, is set to introduce the 50-over One Day International format during the 2025/26 season, which begins this weekend, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 39th season of the CCC Lagos will bowl off on Saturday, November 22, with two Division One matches at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval. The Premier Division is scheduled to begin on December 6 at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval.
Established in 1987 as a four-club competition, the CCC Lagos has expanded into a 22-team league across two divisions.
The Premier Division features nine clubs, while Division One consists of 14 teams split into Leagues A and B, with seven sides each.
Ahead of the new season, Chairman of CCC Lagos and former Yellow Greens captain, Endurance Ofem, expressed optimism about integrating the 50-over format alongside the traditional T20 schedule.
“This season is going to start with a T20 tournament; we are in talks on the introduction of the 50-over tournament. We don’t want to overshoot ourselves, but we have the plans to announce that, which will be played on certain days between the T20 matches,” Ofem said.
“We are expecting to have about 120 games in both formats, but the T20 games are a total of 99.”
To accommodate the expanded fixture list, matches will be staged across three venues.
“Aside from the TBS and UNILAG Oval, we also have CMS Grammar School as the third ground. We have split the Division One fixtures between UNILAG and CMS Grammar School, while the top division will happen at the TBS and UNILAG,” Ofem added.
In Division One, the top two teams from each of Leagues A and B will compete in a Super 4, from which the top two sides will gain promotion to the Premier Division.
For the nine teams in the Premier Division, the champion will be determined through a Super 6 playoff, while the bottom two teams from the regular season will be relegated to Division One.
Rising Stars Cricket Club and Rocks of Abeokuta emerged champions of the Premier Division and Division One, respectively, last season.
