SaharaReporters had earlier reported that protesters took to the streets demanding the immediate deportation of Nigerians linked to the event, warning of possible violent resistance if authorities failed to act.

The ongoing protest in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province over the controversial coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler has escalated into violence, with demonstrators setting vehicles ablaze and looting shops owned by foreign nationals.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that protesters took to the streets demanding the immediate deportation of Nigerians linked to the event, warning of possible violent resistance if authorities failed to act.

The protest, led by members of the political group ActionSA alongside traditional leaders and community members, follows growing outrage over what demonstrators described as an affront to the province’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and established traditional leadership structures.

Unfortunately, the protest turned violent, prompting police to move in to disperse demonstrators in KuGompo City as tensions escalated, according to SABC News.

The protesters set several vehicles and buildings belonging to foreigners ablaze at KuGompo City and quickly moved to another location when police moved in to disperse them.

“Protesters have torched vehicles and buildings allegedly belonging to foreign nationals in protest against the installation of a Nigerian king in the Eastern Cape,” according to Newsroom Afrika.

Also, CDR Africa reported that tensions erupted in the Eastern Cape as protesters set vehicles and buildings ablaze, reportedly targeting properties of foreign nationals amid the outrage over the installation of a Nigerian Igbo king.

“Even a local butchery was not spared by protesters who can be seen looting meat products,” according to EWN Reporter.

According to eNCA, the situation turned bloody as someone was reportedly stabbed allegedly by Ethiopian business owners.

“Motor vehicles have been set ablaze and two individuals have been rushed to hospital to receive medical treatment.”

The controversy has reignited long-standing tensions in South Africa over immigration, economic competition, and the role of foreign nationals in local communities.

It also raises complex legal questions about cultural expression, diaspora identity, and the limits of traditional authority within a constitutional democracy.
