The accusation was made public by Joe, also a community advocate, who said the deceased was among several individuals arrested during an operation allegedly led by the Delta State police operations unit.

A human rights activist, Israel Joe, has raised serious allegations against Adejobi Olumuyiwa, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations in Delta State, revealing that a sick detainee arrested by officers under his command has died while in police custody at the Ekpan Police Station.

The accusation was made public by Joe, also a community advocate, who said the deceased was among several individuals arrested during an operation allegedly led by the Delta State police operations unit.

According to Joe, the victim had been ill while in detention and was earlier seen being rushed out of the police cell before news later emerged that the man had died.

“One of the innocent sick persons arrested by DCP Adejobi Olumuyiwa, who is the DC Operations in Delta State, has reportedly died in Ekpan police custody,” Joe said in a statement.

“I earlier reported when this innocent man arrested by Adejobi and his useless killer team was being rushed out of the cell. It is now confirmed that the man has allegedly passed on.”

Joe condemned the alleged incident, describing it as an injustice and calling for accountability from the police authorities.

“Adejobi should come and eat the corpse. This injustice can never be sustained under our watch,” he said.

He further criticised the silence of the state government over the matter and threatened mass protests if action is not taken.

“The governor will not say anything about this nonsense done by Adejobi and his men until we shut down everywhere with protest. Na dat time dem go wan call my phone off,” Joe stated.

The activist also called for disciplinary action against the police officer, saying the conduct of officers involved in the arrest was unacceptable.

“Adejobi should be transferred to Sambisa forest to meet his match. You cannot come here to kill Deltans. Delta State Command, we cannot take this. The state quiet only una wan boil am,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the alleged death or responding to the accusations raised by the activist.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest of the deceased individual, his health condition prior to detention, and the exact cause of death remain unclear.

Human rights advocates have called for an independent investigation to determine what transpired inside the Ekpan police facility.

Efforts to reach officials of the Delta State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

SaharaReporters had also in 2025 reported that having served for years as the public face of the Nigeria Police Force, Adejobi left behind a trail of scandals.

At the Force Headquarters, he was repeatedly accused of repressing social media users, shielding the institution from accountability, and serving as the regime’s blunt instrument against dissent.

Within the Force itself, senior officers openly described him as being entangled in what they called “women issues.”

Despite this, Adejobi was controversially promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), a move that raised eyebrows both within and outside the Force.

The promotion did not silence his critics, and instead, it intensified public outrage and sharpened questions about his conduct and fitness for the senior role.

His tenure had also drawn international scrutiny.
