Pyrates Confraternity Condemns Governor Kefas For Attending APC Rally After Gunmen Killed 40 In Taraba | Sahara Reporters
He said the governor was absent when the traumatised residents of Binari needed reassurance and support from their leader because he had travelled to attend a political rally where he promised electoral support for his party.
The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), also known as the Pyrates Confraternity, has criticised Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas for attending the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-West campaign flag-off in Kaduna State, hours after gunmen invaded Binari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State and killed at least 40 people.
In a statement titled “The Taraba Massacre: Another Bloodbath in Our Nation,” NAS Cap’n, Dr Charles Meribole, condemned the killings, describing them as “senseless killings” and declaring that the attack was “barbaric, reprehensible and must not go unpunished.”
Meribole mourned the victims and expressed solidarity with survivors, stressing that Kefas’s condemnation of the killings should not mark the end of his responsibility but rather the beginning of decisive action to ensure the perpetrators are arrested.
He said the governor was absent when the traumatised residents of Binari needed reassurance and support from their leader because he had travelled to attend a political rally where he promised electoral support for his party.
“This is profoundly insensitive and falls short of the compassion and responsibility of a public office. Mr Agbu Kefas has failed the critical test of leadership. The people of Binari community deserve protection; they deserve action, not platitudes and directives that are meaningless,” Meribole said.
The NAS leader also condemned what he described as the inadequate responses of political leaders and security agencies to recurring killings in Taraba and other parts of Nigeria, particularly the North, warning that the country was gradually coming under siege.
He said Nigerians had endured too many statements and promises that perpetrators of violence would be brought to justice, without a functioning justice system delivering results through thorough investigations, arrests, prosecutions and punishment of offenders.
Citing figures indicating that at least 20,000 Nigerians had been killed through armed violence since President Bola Tinubu assumed office, Meribole called on the president, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to demonstrate the urgency, resolve and responsibility required to address the country’s security crisis.
The statement read in part: “President Bola Tinubu should recognise that the security of Nigerians is not a peripheral issue to be addressed when convenient or tackled with political rhetoric. It is a central test of his administration’s responsibility to Nigerians and obligation to his oath of office.
“We implore President Bola Tinubu to translate his directives to the security agencies into measurable results. His orders to dismantle criminal networks must come with clear timelines, effective monitoring and consequences for failure.
“Those implementing security operations must be held accountable for their performance, and any official found to have compromised these efforts must face the appropriate consequences.”
Meribole also urged security agencies to intensify their operations against armed groups, arguing that the groups’ continued violence required a sustained and decisive response.
He stressed that security agencies must demonstrate renewed determination in tackling the killings and bringing those responsible to justice.
