VIDEO: ‘I’ll Teach You A Lesson’: Nigerian Policeman Threatens Motorist, Orders Him To Remove Necklace, Glasses During Search | Sahara Reporters
The altercation began when the driver, attempting to monitor the search of his vehicle, requested the officers to focus on one area at a time to prevent any underhand conduct.
A video capturing the moment officers of the Nigeria Police Force harassed and assaulted a driver while searching his vehicle has surfaced online.
In the viral video seen by SaharaReporters on Tuesday and shared on X by @MR__sulaiman2, a Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer involved in the alleged high-handed encounter wore a name tag bearing the name “Afambu Uche.”
The altercation began when the driver, attempting to monitor the search of his vehicle, requested the officers to focus on one area at a time to prevent any underhand conduct.
“Please sir, can you close the door, let’s focus on one side. Let him close the door so we can focus here, so that I can see what he is doing,” the driver was heard saying respectfully.
However, one of the officers aggressively interrogated the driver over his personal effects, calling his jewellery a charm.
When the driver replied that it was his necklace, the officer barked: “Bring it out! What is necklace? Is it not talisman?”
Despite the driver asking why he needed to take off his jewellery, the officer harshly commanded: “I said you should remove it!”
The confrontation escalated rapidly as the officers resorted to intimidation, threats, and physical aggression.

“I will teach you a lesson you have not learned in your life. Open your bag. We are moving you to criminal charge, you are making noise. Who are you?” the officer scoffed before ordering him to take off his glasses.
“Remove the glass in your face. I say remove the glass in your face! Don’t put the glass on until I finish searching.”
When the bewildered driver asked why he was being attacked for simply asking questions, the officer continued his tirade: “When we finish with you, you will learn what you have not learned. I said put that phone in your pocket and put that glass in your pocket.”
A scuffle ensued shortly after the driver insisted on recording the encounter for his safety, prompting the officer to assault him.
“I wouldn’t put my phone in my pocket. Why are you assaulting me? I won’t put my phone in my pocket!” the driver could be heard shouting in distress before the video cut off.
This incident adds to a long list of documented cases of police high-handedness, extortion, and brutality targeted at young Nigerians under the guise of routine stop-and-search operations.
SaharaReporters has repeatedly reported similar cases in which police officers intimidate citizens based on their appearance, style of dress, dreadlocks, possession of expensive mobile phones, or personal jewellery.
In October 2024, public outrage erupted in Enugu State after operatives attached to the Anti-Cult Tactical Squad extrajudicially shot and killed a popular Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, famously known as ‘Igbo Jah’. The killer cop, Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, was subsequently arrested following widespread condemnation and protests.
Similarly, in April 2023, a police officer named Justus Bawa was caught on video slapping a motorist and brutalising him during a heated argument along a highway in Rivers State. Following SaharaReporters’ exposure and subsequent public uproar, the Nigeria Police Force announced the orderly room trial and dismissal of the officer.
Despite repeated assurances by successive Inspectors-General of Police prohibiting officers from invading citizens’ privacy, searching phones without legal warrants, and assaulting motorists, personnel across various tactical squads continue to violate fundamental human rights of Nigerians with impunity.
