Nigeria’s Tinubu launches re-election campaign as economic pain tests support
President Bola Tinubu formally launched his campaign for a second term on Saturday in the northwestern state of Kaduna, as he seeks to secure another mandate amid a challenging economic climate.
Addressing supporters at the Kaduna Township Stadium, the President defended his administration’s record and pushed back against criticism regarding the country’s current economic hardships.
Mr President, the people have spoken, and their voice is loud and clear. Nigerians are happy. Our women are happy, our youths are happy, and the people are encouraged by your leadership. We believe that the President deserves the opportunity to complete this work and take Nigeria to the next level.
During the rally, Tinubu accused the opposition of being responsible for the prevailing hunger and poverty in the country, asserting that his government is working to clean up the mess left by previous administrations.
The upcoming presidential election, scheduled for January 2027, features a crowded field of 18 candidates. Tinubu’s primary challengers include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, both of whom he defeated in the 2023 election.
Political analysts note that while the opposition remains fractured, the President faces significant public discontent over his economic policies, making the path to a second term a complex political battle.
